During Your Shift | All-in-One Driver Guide

Starting trips, processing fares, payments, tips and multi-hire

Starting a trip

  1. From the home screen, tap Start Trip

  2. The meter will begin running and the screen will display the fare, fees & extras, and tariff

  3. The hail light will switch off automatically and status will show Hired

Maxi vehicles: You can manually switch between Sedan and Maxi rates by tapping the Tariff section when transporting five or more passengers (High Occupancy Vehicle).

Fees & extras

Government levies, tolls, airport fees and peak time charges are added to the fare automatically.

To add an incidental charge such as a cleaning fee:

  1. Tap Fees & Extras on the home screen, or tap Action Menu → Edit Extras/Tolls

  2. Select the relevant extra

  3. Tap Close

The extra will appear on the terminal display for passenger visibility.

Note: Fees and extras are predefined by your network. Only extras configured for your network will appear.

Action menu

Tap the Action Menu button (top right of screen) during a trip to access:

  • Edit Extras/Tolls — add or adjust extras

  • Start Multi-Hire Trip — for shared trips with multiple passengers

Multi-hire trips

A multi-hire trip is a shared trip where unrelated passengers each pay their own fare.

  1. Tap Action Menu → Start Multi-Hire Trip

  2. When dropping off a passenger mid-trip, tap Action Menu → Multi-Hire Drop Off to process their fare

  3. For the final passenger, tap Pause Trip then End Trip

Pausing and ending a trip

To pause the meter: Tap Pause Trip — the fare will stop incrementing

To resume: Tap Continue Trip — the fare continues from where it paused

To end the trip:

  1. Tap Pause Trip

  2. Tap End Trip

  3. The final fare breakdown will display — showing flagfall, distance fare, any extras and the total

  4. The terminal will prompt the passenger to pay

Processing payments

After ending the trip, the terminal displays the final fare and prompts payment. It automatically recognises all accepted payment types.

Bank card (debit/credit)

  • Tap, swipe or insert the card

  • Once approved, remove the card if inserted and tap OK to print the receipt

Cabcharge card (digital or physical)

  • Tap the card or phone on the contactless reader

  • If the Cabcharge card has insufficient balance, the terminal will deduct what's available and display the outstanding amount — the passenger can pay the remainder by bank card, another Cabcharge card or cash

Government subsidy card (where applicable)

  • Tap the subsidy card first before taking regular payment

  • The terminal deducts the correct subsidised fare, then the passenger pays the remainder with their preferred method

  • VIC only: Insert the Victorian MPTP card to apply the subsidy

Cash

  1. Tap Cash on the terminal

  2. Take payment from the passenger

  3. Confirm by tapping YES on the terminal

Adding a tip

  1. After the fare is displayed, tap Tip

  2. Choose a percentage or enter a custom dollar amount

Note: Tips cannot be added to Cabcharge cards, Government Subsidy Cards or Fixed Price Trips. If a tip is accidentally added with these payment methods, the terminal will return to the original fare automatically.

Split payment

Split payment allows a passenger to pay using two different methods.

  1. Tap Split

  2. Enter the amount to charge to the first payment method

  3. Process the first payment

  4. The remaining balance is then paid using a second method

  5. Each amount is processed as a separate transaction

Pre-pay

Pre-pay allows a passenger to pay an estimated fare before the trip begins.

  1. Tap Menu → Pre-pay

  2. Enter the estimated amount and tap the green arrow

Important: The maximum pre-pay amount is $80. Cabcharge and TTSS cards cannot be used for pre-pay. The meter must still run for the entire trip. At the end of the trip, the passenger pays the difference if the fare exceeds the pre-paid amount — or receives a refund if it is lower. Drivers must refund if the final fare is less than the pre-paid amount.
