SmartMove - What Merchants & Installers Need to Know

Preparing for SmartMove and Cabcharge integration

What's changing

With FAREWAYplus, you had multiple pieces of hardware in your vehicle: a Cabcharge payment terminal, meter, 4G modem and printer. The new Integrated solution simplifies this, leaving just two important devices:

  • Your SmartMove dispatch system — which now also acts as your meter

  • Your new Cabcharge terminal — for integrated payment processing

Your Cabcharge hard meter is no longer required. The SmartMove dispatch system calculates the fare, and at the end of each trip that fare is passed to the Cabcharge terminal for payment. Less hardware, less complexity.

How it works for drivers

Automatic mode: At the end of a trip, the fare passes directly from the SmartMove meter to the Cabcharge terminal. The terminal displays the amount and prompts the passenger to pay — no driver input required.

Manual mode: The driver taps the "Cabcharge" button on the SmartMove screen to push the fare through. If the button isn't visible, tap >> (more) on the dispatch screen — it may be on a second page of options.

Driver login: Drivers do not need to log into the Cabcharge terminal manually. The terminal logs in automatically when the driver processes their first payment through SmartMove. Alternatively, SmartMove can configure the shift to start on the terminal at the same time driver logs into dispatch. Please reach out to SmartMove to find out more.

Device placement — important

Regulatory standards require that the meter is clearly visible to both the driver and the passenger at all times. Drivers may have their SmartMove dispatch device positioned to the right, next to the driver — this does not meet the placement requirement for the new setup.

Your dispatch or meter display must be positioned in the centre of the vehicle where passengers can clearly see fare calculations.

SmartMove offers three options to achieve this:

  • Relocate the dispatch and soft meter to a central position in the vehicle

  • Add a secondary screen that mirrors the meter display from a right-mounted tablet, placed centrally for passenger visibility

  • Connect a compatible 3rd party hard meter device that is placed in the centre of the vehicle

Contact SmartMove to discuss which option is right for your vehicle setup before installation. Do not proceed until placement is resolved.

What to prepare before your installation

Whether you are self-installing or booking with an authorised Cabcharge installer, getting the following sorted before you begin will save significant time and reduce pairing delays on the day.

1. Confirm your meter setup

Your vehicle must have a functioning SmartMove-compatible meter. Cabcharge does not supply meters for SmartMove integrations.

  • Most SmartMove tablets include built-in soft meter functionality — confirm with SmartMove whether this is active on your device

  • If it's available but not enabled, SmartMove can activate it remotely

  • If your setup requires a third-party hard meter (Schmidt, Novax, Martin, etc.) or secondary screen, contact SmartMove to confirm compatibility and arrange supply if needed.

Do not begin installation until your meter is confirmed and working. Installing the terminal without a functioning meter will result in integration failure.

2. Get your Dispatch Pairing ID

Each vehicle requires a unique Pairing ID to link the Cabcharge terminal to your SmartMove dispatch system. Find it in the Custom Report on Fleet Management in SmartMove under "Fetch new CabCharge terminal dispatch pairing ID" — or contact SmartMove directly to obtain it. Have this ready before you start.

3. Clean your data

Formatting errors or missing data in your SmartMove portal can lead to installatio delays. Before installation, check the following are correct:

  • Plate numbers: no spaces, consistent format (e.g. ABC123 — not ABC 123 or ABC-123)

  • ABN: 11 digits, no spaces (e.g. 12345678901)
